The technology market of 2024 is a battlefield. People are applying for thousands of jobs and getting scammed. If you don’t do something different, you will be outdone. It’s as simple as that. So in this blog post, I’ll tell you what you should already be doing, along with a new, unheard-of method for landing tech jobs that no one has talked about. Let’s get started.
Step one: have the skills
You should make sure that on your resume you have some personal projects, open source work, freelancing on Upwork or Fiverr, and finally some paid or unpaid internships. If you don’t know your tech stack, you won’t get very far. But even if you do, it’s not 2020 anymore. You won’t get a job just because you have the skills.
Step two: go outside
Here’s how:
A. Apply for as many jobs as possible
This is basic. This is easy. We should all be doing this now. But this is no longer enough.
B. Attend networking events in person
If you live in New York, Toronto, Montreal, go to some tech event every weekend because you never know who you’re going to meet.
C. Be prepared for interviews
You might get one out of nowhere, and if you’re not prepared, if you haven’t done your LeetCode, if you don’t know its syntax, it will do everything it can.
Step Three: The Social Media Method
This way of getting tech jobs is frankly underrated. It’s about two things: YouTube and Twitter.
There is a vast tech community on Twitter. Everyone you want to work for is probably on Twitter. Start posting every day, reach around a thousand followers, share your code and progress, and let people know you’re looking for a job. Once you reach around a thousand followers, people will start contacting you.
youtube
YouTube is super powerful because you can show off your coding skills and your personality. Once you reach between 2 and 3000 subscribers, people will start to notice. You want to make sure that you’re coding live every single day, putting general 5 to 6-minute videos out talking about the tech industry, and make sure to put within all of your descriptions that you’re looking for a job.
This method works because it is more efficient. You have influence. Instead of applying for one job at a time, if you write a tweet that goes semi-viral on Twitter, maybe five hiring managers could see it. It’s much more efficient than applying to one person at a time, where an AI scanner automatically rejects your resume.
Conclusion
In the brutal technology market of 2024, standing out is key. It is not enough to have the skills and apply for a job. You need to put yourself out there, network, and be prepared for interviews. But to really differentiate yourself, harness the power of social media. Get followers on Twitter and YouTube, show off your skills and personality, and let job offers come your way. This is the invaluable way to land tech jobs in 2024. It’s time to take control of your job search and start doing things differently.
